about

Lelo Nazario is among the most innovative composers in Brazilian jazz, and his fourth solo album proves to be as creative as the artist himself. Released in 1998 it is a homage to some fellow musicians he admires, such as Clare Fischer, Denny Zeitlin, Daniel Goyonne, and Roger Kellaway. While bringing to “Simples” some of their styles and techniques, Nazario breaths his own unique harmonic and melodic approach into every composition. The album’s title (meaning "simple") serves as a provocation as it contrasts with the very complex, sophisticated harmonic structures and unexpected melodic juxtapositions of the themes. The album features 9 tracks including “Claridade” – based on Fischer’s conceptions of harmony –, “Armadilha” (meaning "trap") – that uses different bar lengths in alternation –, and “Frevo Colado” – which Nazario has dedicated to his wife Irati Antonio, and was built on frevo rhythm, a traditional Brazilian form. On whole album, the pianist dives into a variety of musical structures while creating his own music concept.

Personnel: Lelo Nazario (keyboards), Marlui Miranda (voice), Teco Cardoso (saxes, flute), Peter Erskine (drums), Alvaro Faria (percussion).

What critics said:
“A mantra in the form of a work of art ... of international level.” (Arnaldo DeSouteiro, Tribuna da Imprensa)
“A rare musicality.” (Dudu Portes, Revista Batera)
“A most enjoyable musical experience.” (Adam Baruch)
“The result is pleasurable contemporary music, permeated by Brazilian elements and a lot of jazz.” (Carlos Bozzo Junior, Folha de S. Paulo)
“Lelo has greater harmonic concern. This is what you hear in the song "Frevo Colado", which could have had a Jobinian soul, if it wasn't for the modernity impressed by the composer.” (Alexandre Pavan, Correio da Cidadania)
