about

Between the end of Grupo Um’s activities and the beginning of his venture with Pau Brasil (which is when he even received a Grammy nomination), keyboard player and composer Lelo Nazario worked on his third solo project, the album “Se…” (If…). Recorded in 1987 and released for the first time on vinyl in 1989, then on CD in 2004, “Se…” enlists a cast of incredible collaborators, all of them Lelo’s friends from Grupo Um and Hermeto Pascoal Band. A stimulating blend of sounds and styles, the album quickly became a contemporary Brazilian jazz landmark, not only due to the exceptional compositions but also to the all-star team of musicians he has gathered around him. “Se…” originally featured six original themes that draw upon elements from electroacoustic language to modern jazz, but the CD edition also included 15 minutes of previously unreleased bonus tracks. The composition “Sete Léguas” (Seven Leagues), based on the structure of Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints,” is a highlight.
