about

Africasiamerica is the fifth solo album by pianist, composer and arranger Lelo Nazario, who has been a staple of the Brazilian jazz scene since the 1980s. Creator of a unique style combining contemporary and electronic music with Afro-Brazilian forms, his work embodies the timelessness of all great music. First released in 2007 on CD by Editio Princeps and Utopia Studio, Africasiamerica was among the best 10 jazz albums of the year by Jazz Station blog. The album features eight original compositions by the author, such as “Insólito” (meaning elusive), the result of multiple harmonic overlays, “Solúvel em Água” (water-soluble), a set of fluid and sparse musical elements that mix together in new forms, and “Perplex city,” which reveals the state of perplexity we are involved in today. Two other tunes are worth noting: “Piano Voador” (flying piano), wich explores different piano textures and lots of percussion, and the title track “Africasiamerica”, a tribute to the very rich cultures of those three continents. The album also includes two songs by other artists, both arranged by Lelo. Nazario’s brilliant, original style on piano and keyboards is accompanied by special performances by guest musicians.

Personnel: Lelo Nazario (keyboards, piano), Teco Cardoso (saxes, flutes), Felipe Ávila (guitar), Benjamin Taubkin (piano on track 6), Guello (percussion on track 6), Alvaro Faria (percussion on track 1)

What critics said:
“Fusion for the third millennium, free of cliches … the universal Brazilian Lelo Nazario, another to achieve perfect balance between acoustic piano, Rhodes and electronic keyboards.” – Arnaldo DeSouteiro, Jazz Station
“Inventive experimenter.” – Carlos Calado, Folha de S. Paulo
